The Cycle of Abuse Illustrated Through Single Photos and Multiple Models

Statistics show that 70% of people who are abused as children will grow up into adults who will in turn abuse children. A recent awareness ad campaign by Mexican organization Save the Children shared this fact in single photographs that are both creative and difficult to stomach.

The advertisements were originally published back in May 2012, and were created by Mexican agency Y&R and photographer Ale Burset.

Each one uses five models showing one individual at different stages of life. In the foreground, the individual is experiencing abuse as a child. Older versions of the abused child grow up as they walk across the background of the frame, and turn into the original abuser by the time they walk a full circle.

“70% of abused children turn into abusive adults. Donate at savethechildren.mx,” the advertisements say.

Resentment of the Day: Rapper Arrested for Refusing to Hand Over HIs Arizona Iced Tea

Who knew drinking iced tea in a parking lot could get you arrested? This footage of a plain clothes police officer arresting a man who apparently refused to hand over his Arizona Iced Tea has been making the rounds today, with many viewers calling it out as a clear abuse of authority. As seen in the video, the arresting officer refuses to properly identify himself while confronting rapper Christopher “Xstrav” Beatty and subsequently tackles him to the ground and places him in handcuffs for “trespassing.” According to the North Carolina Court System website, Beatty was arrested by officer Rick Libero and is being charged with Misdemeanor Second Degree Trespass and Misdemeanor Resisting Public Officer.

Note: A few skeptics on Reddit initially speculated that the footage may have been staged, but another video of Beatty being taken into police custody soon surfaced to confirm its authenticity.

I would’ve been arrested so fast if he’d tried to take an Arizona from me.

When my daughter first showed signs of hating herself, I got out photoshop. We went and found an image of her choosing, of a woman. I spent the next two hours showing her just how easy it was to alter this woman. I changed her hair, whitened her teeth, made her thinner. I erased her blemishes and even made her taller while my daughter sat there aghast. At the end of it she loudly said - ” THAT’S NOT FAIR!”

I told her that damn near every image she saw of people in magazines, on television, etc, was altered like this, and that she should never compare herself to that, because even supermodels don’t look like supermodels.

I wish I could do that for every child. I wish it was a mandatory class in school.

In 2004, The New York Times wrote an article about the loneliest whale in the world. Scientists have been tracking her since 1992 and they discovered the problem:

She isn’t like any other baleen whale. Unlike all other whales, she doesn’t have friends. She doesn’t have a family. She doesn’t belong to any tribe, pack or gang. She doesn’t have a lover. She never had one. Her songs come in groups of two to six calls, lasting for five to six seconds each. But her voice is unlike any other baleen whale. It is unique—while the rest of her kind communicate between 12 and 25hz, she sings at 52hz. You see, that’s precisely the problem. No other whales can hear her. Every one of her desperate calls to communicate remains unanswered. Each cry ignored. And, with every lonely song, she becomes sadder and more frustrated, her notes going deeper in despair as the years go by.
